Event Management  RECL-102

This combination theory and practical course is the third in the programming stream.  The theoretical areas will prepare students for a start-to-finish master plan in the implementation of festivals and events including conceptualizing and organizational design, local compliance, risk management, research and targeting markets feasibility, marketing and promotion, operations and logistics, staffing, and evaluating events. One third of the course focuses on fund raising ... securing sponsorships to ensure a successful festival or event!

 

Community Development RECL-230

The course examines the origins of social welfare, the way in which social services develop and the way in which services help/hinder the growth of communities. This examination also requires the exploration of the political ideologies which have shaped the Canadian social welfare system, the macro and micro political structures which determine priorities of the social service system and the inter-relationship between social services and the development of communities. Lastly, the course focuses on the role of recreation as a service and the role of the recreationist as change agent, referring agent and advocate.

 

Field Seminar 3  RECL-209

The purpose of this course is to allow students the opportunity to discuss and problem solve how recreation theory integrates with practical recreation delivery. Prerequisite: RECL124 Field Seminar 2 *Students must not be on academic probation

 

Field Placement 3  RECL-210

Field Placement is the opportunity to develop and practice the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential to the Recreation and Leisure Practitioners role of facilitating leisure for others. During this placement you will be given opportunities to work independently and as a team member as you contribute to the goals and activities of the agency. You will carry out activities required to implement programs offered by the agency. During this 360 hour placement, you may also be given the opportunity to demonstrate a range of leadership styles, prepare promotional materials, develop and evaluate programs for individuals and/or groups in the community. An important and essential tool for your success is your use of the field manual and utilizing the feedback and guidance provided by your field supervisor and faculty advisor. A reflective weekly journal describing your performance progress is suggested. Specific competencies to be demonstrated are described in the Field Manual. Prerequisite: RECL-125

 

Report Writing for Recreation & Leisure Services  ENGL-207

This course focuses on the development of report writing and research skills specifically required in recreation and leisure services employment settings.

 

Global Citizenship - From Social Analysis to Social Action GNED-500

Global citizenship provides students with an opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills required to live and work in a world that is globally interconnected. Students will examine and critically analyze social problems, gain an understanding of identity and values, develop an awareness of media conglomeration, power, and control, and investigate issues of equality and equity using different perspectives to develop a plan for social action that will bring about positive change. This course allows students to develop a sound understanding of what it means to be a global citizen, both personally and professionally, and the ways in which they can make a contribution to an equitable society and world.

Launching Your Career  RECL-222

 

This course will concentrate on students’ professional development and preparation for employment in the field of recreation. Specifically, areas to be covered will include professional organizations, job preparation, including the development of a portfolio, networking and identification of trends and issues in the sector. Observations and facilitation of issues in the field as well as placement related problem solving will also be included. Prerequisite: RECL209 Field Seminar 3

 

 

The Business of Recreation & Entrepreneurship  RECL-223

 

The Business of Recreation & Entrepreneurship is a stepping stone to the knowledge and abilities related to entrepreneurial strategies and management aspects of public and commercial recreation and tourism.  Topics include the framework of contemporary business, legalities and factors in business success or failure.  Various industry opportunities are reviewed with public and commercial recreation industries.  The Business of Recreation & Entrepreneurship will show students how to: complete feasibility studies; apply management principles; maintain social responsibility; understanding to various innovations around product and processes with both public and private sector; identify product and process innovations; and ethics in business. 

 

 

Recreation Management and Marketing  RECL-231

This staff focused course will concentrate on employee/employer responsibilities including human rights issues, the development of a staffing process and volunteer program, staff supervision, labour relations, organizational structures and budgets and contracts. The creation of a marketing plan and the generation of revenue including the aspects of grant and proposal writing will also be covered.
