Alumnus of Distinction Award Recipient 2015

"Throughout my years of high school and university, I worked part time with the City of Toronto in Recreation. I loved teaching skating, working as a summer camp staff, teaching leadership and many sport programs. I realized that I wanted to take the recreation field further than working part time, I wanted it to be my career. The RLS Program caught my attention after receiving my Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto. I chose RLS because I wanted to obtain the knowledge, the skills, and to be educated in the “business of play”. I enjoyed both my placements at Variety Village and with the City of Markham. Variety Village gave me hands-on experience with working with people of all ages and with all abilities. The experience helped me learn how to adapt programs to meet the needs of the participants. With the City of Markham, I was fortunate to be placed at the Civic Centre where I worked closely with the Mayor’s youth members. I gained experience with planning special events and executed many youth events for Markham. Shortly after graduation, I worked as a Community Recreation Programmer with the City of Toronto with the Afterschool Recreation Care program. Since 2011, I have been working full time with the City of Markham at Angus Glen Community Centre as a Community Program Supervisor. I am responsible for the tennis centre, general programs and the older adult club. RLS gave me the insight to various branches of recreation, such as long term care, therapeutic, private recreation and municipal. It helped me narrow down which field of Recreation I was more passionate about, and municipal recreation was right for me. I am very happy that I chose the RLS program because the friends you make and the people you meet during placement are incredible advocates of recreation. I believe physical literacy is for all ages, and many life skills are learnt when you participate in recreation programs!
